NIKHEF DataGrid Tutorial Practical Info
For "local" people it is quite simple. Show up at around 8:45 in
room H2.38 (the "lecture room" in the corridor) on Thursday
and pick up your course material and some coffee. The detailed
example agenda can be
found on the web.
If you are new to Amsterdam, you can have a look at the
driving
and bus directions page to get to NIKHEF. A detailed
map of the
area is available. Also have a look at and/or print the
tutorial practicalities
sheet.
If you arrive early, you can use the NIKHEF public terminal
facilities in room H1.37 also on Wednesday. The terminal room is located
on the first floor, next to the main hall. There is sufficient wireless
network coverage in the building.

 Pointers to useful stuff
  - Public Transport

  - The public transport system is rather complex by any standard.
An explanation about the "strippenkaart" is available form the
      city transport service.
From the centre to NIKHEF is two "zones", so invalidate
three "strips" (you only stamp the last one of them).

If you spent a few days here, buying a "strippenkaart" at the
ticket window of a train station or the tobacconist is much
cheaper (take a "15 stippenkaart" for adults).

  - Agenda (example only)

  - Schedule and links to all presentations

  - Acronyms

  - PDF version of the EDG Acronym poster. A printed version is included
      in your hand outs

  - LDAP browser

  - On the "elel*" machines, you can avail over a visual LDAP browser.
Start it with the command /global/ices/toolset/bin/lbe

  - Printing

  - You can print PostScript from the elel* machines only using the
lpr command. The printer closest to the lecture room is
called "H2" and is located in the main hall, same floor.

  - Network

  - These is wired and wireless (SSID="NIKHEF-WIRELESS") networking
available - use DHCP to get an address. Name resolving
is offered by 192.16.199.1 and 192.16.199.4. The local SMTP mail
      relay is "smtp.nikhef.nl".

You cannot print from or receive mail on the DataGrid User Interface
      machine.
